Municipal Roadside Weed Control Program

As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the Agricultural Service Board conducts the municipal roadside weed spraying program focusing on Noxious weeds. In areas of concern, we also immediately control Prohibited Noxious in municipal areas. The A.S.B. also supports the Western Area Training Centre (DND) in their efforts to control Prohibited Noxious and Noxious weeds within their boundaries. The A.S.B. also supports the Town of Wainwright with their vegetation control program.

If a ratepayer chooses not to participate in the municipal roadside weed spraying program, a “No-Spray/ Haying Agreement” is to be completed and returned to the Municipal Office every year before May 1st.

Municipal Roadside Brush Control Program

As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the Agricultural Service Board conducts the municipal roadside brush control spraying program focusing on encroaching brush within municipal right-of-ways.

Municipal Roadside Seeding Program

The Agricultural Service Board works with the Public Works Department on the remediation of newly constructed municipal right-of-ways and borrow pits. Landowners have the choice of what grass seed mixture they want their owned land re-seeded to.

Municipal Roadside Mowing Program

As part of an effective integrated vegetation management plan, the M.D. of Wainwright conducts a mowing program of approximately 850 miles of municipal roadside allowance.

Municipal Seed Cleaning Plants

The A.S.B. work closely with the two municipal seed cleaning plants in Wainwright and Edgerton; by collecting seed samples, annual inspections and the issuance of yearly operating licenses. This is in accordance with the Alberta Weed Control Act.

Provincial Pest Surveying Program

The A.S.B. conducts several seasonal agricultural pest surveys. The information gathered is incorporated into the Provincial pest control forecast maps. These maps can be accessed through the Aberta government website. The pests that are surveyed include: Grasshoppers, Clubroot of Canola, Fusarium, Wheat Midge, Bertha Armyworm, Diamondback moth and the Provincial Weed inventory Survey.

Provincial Rat Control Program

The A.S.B. maintains vigilance by conducting local inspections and baiting of farms to prevent the establishment of Norway Rat infestations. This is in accordance with the Provincial Pest Control Act. For more information, visit our Rat Control Program section.

Calendar Photo Contest

The A.S.B. offers a photo contest to the local ratepayers, with winning entries added to the annual Municipal Calendar. For more information, view our Calendar Photo Contest section.

Rural Routes Supper and Farmer Appreciation

The A.S.B. hosts the annual Rural Routes Supper and appreciation and recognition of the local agricultural community and area producers.

AAAF Memorial Bursary

The Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen offer a bursary in the amount of $500.00 to post secondary students enrolled in agricultural or environmental studies, from the Northeast region of Alberta.

100 Year Farm Family Awards

The 100 Year Farm Family Award is presented in recognition of our rural families that have farmed on their original homestead for 100 years. Application forms are available at all Town Offices within the M.D. of Wainwright, at our Administration Office, or for download here. The family receives a metal plaque (24" x 12") and Municipal plaque commemorating this historic achievement. For more information, view our Farm Family Awards section.

 

Services

Private Spraying

The A.S.B. offers private land spot-spraying operations to ratepayers for weeds such as Toadflax, Tansy, Scentless Chamomile, Leafy Spurge and other Prohibited Noxious or Noxious weeds on a cost recovery basis.

Beaver Dam Removal

The A.S.B. offers the removal of beaver dams on private land and is completed on a cost recovery basis; beaver removal is the responsibility of the landowner. Removal of beaver dams impacting municipal road allowances or infrastructure occurs when necessary. The M.D. of Wainwright employ a Licensed Blaster to carry out the above activities.

Environmental Farm Plan

The A.S.B. offers to assist farmers with the completion of environmental farm plan workbooks (EFP) for no cost. Workbooks can be accessed through the M.D. office. Municipal Shelterbelt and Tree Pest Awareness

The A.S.B. works with rural landowners who have interest in establishing new tree lines and maintaining exsisting shlterbelts with pest problem support.

If you would like more information on how to plan (before you plant) different functional lines, tree species choices and planting spacing reccomendations, stop in at the office to pick up a free package full of information.

The M.D. can also be called upon to help identify tree problems (insects, diesease, environmental).  Give Tanis Ponath, Asst. Agricultrual Fieldman, a call at the M.D. office 780-842-4454.

Also the M.D. has available for use a seedling tree planter, and also a mulch roller applicator.  See information under rental equpment below.

Municipal Rural Updates and Awareness

The A.S.B. works diligently in gathering current information that pertains to rural ratepayers. This information is available through municipal newsletters, radio programs, posters, and newspaper articles. Periodically, ratepayer meetings are held; waterwell workshops, shelterbelt meeting, crop pest updates etc. Also, problem pests can be brought into the office for information and identification.

Municipal Tankloader Location Sites

The A.S.B. provides three municipal tankloader facilities for local ratepayers to use for agricultural or other special-use approvals. For more information, view our Municipal Tankloaders section.

Agricultural Pesticide Empty Container Sites

The A.S.B. provides four locations for farmers to drop off their empty, triple rinsed and punctured pesticide containers, for future recycling purposes. More information can be found in our Agricultural Pesticide Empty Container Collection Sites section.

 
 

Rental Equipment

Cattle Scale Rental

The Cattle Scale can be booked and picked up at the Municipal Public Works Shop. A charge of $30 per day is billed to the user.

Livestock rubber mats are also available to 4-H Clubs and community groups upon request to the Administration Office.

Skunk Trap Rental

Skunk traps can be picked up at the M.D. Public Works Shop for use of up to 2 weeks. If the trap is damaged or lost, the renter is billed for the full replacement cost.

Shelterbelt Tree Planter and Mulch Roller Applicator

Both machines are available for use by landowners.  The tree planter can work behind a tractor or truck with a pin hitch assembly (no hydraulics required).

The mulch roller applicator can only be used behind a tractor with at least 40hp plus hydraulic hookups.  The landowner must purchase their own mulch plastic rolls.

Municipal staff can assist with planting.

Magpie Traps

Magpie traps can be picked up at the M.D. Public Works Shop for use of up to 2 weeks. If the trap is damaged or lost, the renter is billed for the full replacement cost. If the magpie trap is not returned after 2 weeks the borrower will be billed $125.00 plus GST for the full replacement cost.

Forage Bale Testing Probes

Forage probes can be picked up at the M.D. Administration Office for use of up to 3 days. The renter will be responsible for any and all costs associated with repair or replacement of damaged probes.

R.F.I.D. Tag Reader

R.F.I.D. cattle ear tag reader can be picked up at the M.D. Administration Office for use of up to 3 days. The renter will be responsible for any and all costs associated with repair or replacement of damaged probes.
